Extraction Process - Steam Distillation

Essential oils and absolutes, concentrated forms of plant essence, undergo various extraction methods, each tailored to the source plant. Among these methods are solvent extraction, maceration, enfleurage, cold-pressing, and steam distillation. This discussion will delve into the intricate process of steam distillation, a widely employed method in the extraction of essential oils and absolutes.

Steam Distillation Overview:

Steam distillation stands out as the most favored technique for extracting essential oils. It capitalizes on steam to transform volatile compounds within plant parts into vapor, ultimately collecting them as essential oil through a cooling and condensation process.

Extraction Steps:

  1. Preparation of Plant Parts: The intact plant parts are carefully added to a sizable container.

  2. Steam Introduction: Steam is then introduced to the container, initiating the vaporization of volatile compounds within the plant.

  3. Vapor Ascension: The vaporized compounds, carried by steam, rise to the top of the container.

  4. Condensation Unit: The steam and vaporized plant matter are guided through a pipe into a condensation unit.

  5. Cooling Process: Within the condensation unit, cold water circulates to cool down the steam and vaporized material, returning them to a liquid state.

  6. Separation Stage: The now-liquefied mixture, enriched with essential oil, is directed into a separator.

  7. Oil and Water Division: Due to the distinct properties of oil and water, they don't mix. The separated phases are siphoned off individually.

  8. Final Oil Extraction: The resultant oil, now separate from water, encapsulates all the inherent properties and phytonutrients of the original plant.

This detailed steam distillation process ensures the extraction of a high-quality essential oil, rich in the essence of the parent plant and suitable for various applications in aromatherapy, perfumery, and holistic well-being.
